Repairing a hole or tear in a suit

The necessary equipment

To carry out a repair at home, you’ll need to invest in some equipment.

  • Specialised neoprene glue ~€20
  • Fine brush
  • For optimum repair: a piece of neoprene
  • Recommended: P3 gas mask ~€40

Repairing a hole simply (method 1)

This method is simple, but is not very durable.

  • Apply glue to the brush.
  • Then apply a thin layer of glue to the edges of the hole. If it’s a snag: apply to both sides of the snag.
  • Allow the adhesive to breathe for 1m30. This means that the ends must not be glued before this time.
  • When this time has passed, glue the edges/ends. Apply pressure with your fingers so that the glue sets well, to the point where the tear in the neoprene becomes hard to discern.

Tip: wait 24 hours before returning to the water with the wetsuit to make sure the glue has set properly.

Repairing a hole and keeping water out (method 2)

The problem with method 1 is that it may only last a few outings. What’s more, there’s a risk of water coming in through micro-holes in the glue. If you have a wetsuit for fairly cold waters, either for diving or for surfing in the summer months, then we advise you to use method 2.

  • Using method 1
  • Buy or find a piece of lightweight neoprene
  • Make a piece of neoprene 2cm larger in circumference than the hole
  • Turn the suit over to access the inside where the hole is.
  • Apply glue to the piece of neoprene
  • Wait 1m30
  • Glue the piece in place, centring it on the hole
  • Press firmly for one minute

Tip: wait 24 hours before returning to the water and take care not to force the yoke when putting on and taking off the wetsuit.
